The barnacle goose mainly winters on the Atlantic coasts of Scotland and Ireland, but in summer it travels north to the Arctic and breeds on its many islands. The fact that the goose was never seen to breed gave rise to the myth that it spontaneously generated from barnacles. The barnacle goose is a medium sized, black and white goose. Barnacle geese occur in three separate populations that breed in northeast Greenland, in Svalbard and in northwest Russia and the Baltic region. This belief grew because goose barnacles have black-and-white stripes (like the geese) and the nests of barnacle geese were never seen. As a result, people even considered the barnacle goose acceptable to eat on Fridays and during Lent, despite the Church's ban on eating meat at these times, because it was not 'born of the flesh'.
